How do you start a photography website?
There are 4 main steps to start a photography website: domain name, hosting, design/theme, and content.
Every website needs to be hosted. A web host is just a home for your site and its content. We also call this a server.
The host then ‘shows’ your website to visitors when they type in your web address, also known as a domain name.
Then we need ‘software’ to actually build the look of your website and input the content to it.
For this I use WordPress.
WordPress is a free open source Content Management System (CMS) that sits on your web host. It’s a bit like the operating system for your computer and allows anyone to make, design, write, and manage their own website without knowing any code. The platform powers also 40% of all websites on the internet, including BBC, NASA, and of course our Link Juicee website. The best thing is WordPress is totally beginner-friendly and features everything you’ll ever need, from SEO Plugins to eCommerce shopping carts.
It’s not! We’ll be using Web Juicee during this step-by-step guide, which takes care of everything from hosting and support to full web design. The best thing is they’ll automatically install WordPress, so you’ll be set up and ready to be starting a website for the world to see in no time!
Why Web Juicee? 6 main reasons:
1. Affordable (from £15)
2. Reliable (99.9% uptime)
3. Automated install of WordPress

6. Layer upon Layer of Security.
When you start a photography website, you need to follow these 4 simple steps.
4 simple steps to help you start a photography website
Choose and register a domain name
A domain name, or web address, is what people type into their browser to view your website. scottlathamphotography.com is my domain name. It’s also used for email, such as firstname.lastname@example.org.
There’s a wide range of domain name extensions available, including .com, .co.uk, .photography, .org, .biz. The possibilities are virtually endless these days.
Registration typically costs just £0.99p for the first year.
I recommend GoDaddy. Not only are they the cheapest but they also have the best customer support and an easy to use website and account dashboard.
Head over to the GoDaddy website and search for your required domain name.
If your domain name is available, add it to your basket and register your account.
If you want to give your new website an instant SEO boost, then one secret technique commonly used by SEO gurus is to purchase an expired domain.
Setup website hosting
As I mentioned earlier, We’ll use Web Juicee as our example for setting up your hosting.
The entry-level “Insurgency” package is more than enough for most new websites.
Web Juicee offers dedicated WordPress hosting and comes with unrivaled support and premium tools and plugins, for FREE, which usually costs $99 a month.
They’ll even set everything up for you, install plugins and themes, and get you up and running in minutes.
You can sign up here.
Choose a WordPress theme
Now you’ll be wanting to choose the initial WordPress theme for your new site!
I recommend having a look through the thousands available on ThemeForest.net
Most of the websites I build use the Avada Theme. The most sold WordPress theme of all time. It comes with a very simple drag and drop builder and powerful plugins, as well as 70+ prebuilt websites available with one-click install to help you get started.
Once you have purchased your theme, download the zip files and login to the admin panel of your website.
On the left-hand menu click Appearances > Themes > Add New. Upload your new theme.
Again, if you struggle, the team at Web Juicee will do this for you at no cost.
The next step is to familiarise yourself with WordPress and edit any page text or create new pages and menus.
Add some content
Login to WordPress to get going.
If your theme has prebuilt websites or demos then go through the pages and change any text and images.
If your website just gives you a colour scheme or layout, then starting a website page or blog post is simple.
First, we need to understand the difference between Pages and Posts. Essentially, a page is just that. A Post is a blog article.
So let’s take my website as an example.
The Home, Blog, and About ‘pages’ are pages. This article your reading now is a post. Your posts will show as a grid or list embedded into your ‘blog’ page or anywhere your theme or WordPress builder plugin places them.
WordPress makes it easy to start writing content that looks great. Clicking on “Posts or Pages” > “Add New” will open up the editor window, which allows you to build, format, and write your content without any need for code.
Once you have a couple of articles published on your website’s topic, it’s then time to start growing your audience so people can find your new website.
6 ways to get traffic today!
Aside from publishing high-quality content, the most important thing is to get visitors (traffic) to your website.

Install RankMath SEO Plugin

Easily customize important SEO settings, control which pages are indexable, and how you want your website to appear in search with Structured data.

To install Rank Math, On your WordPress admin area click on “Plugins” > “Add New” then search for Rank Math. Once it loads, click Install and then Activate. You’ll now see Rank Math in your menu on the left-hand side. Simply complete the installation, Rank Math then verifies your site’s settings and recommends the ideal settings for best performance.
The step-by-step wizard then sets up your site’s SEO, social profiles, webmaster profiles, and other SEO settings.
Make YouTube Videos
You may have noticed that YouTube videos appear high in Google’s search results.
This shows that Google considers video to be as important, if not more important, as text-only pages.
Article or page search results, videos, images, news, books, and local searches (more on those soon) are placed together in Google’s search results. This is to provide the most useful information for people searching for keywords or phrases.
The best way to utalise YouTube videos is by writing articles about your services or products on your website’s blog and then creating videos on YouTube on that subject.
Add the link to the article to the YouTube video description. This will build backlinks to your site, meaning your customer can find you more readily.
Set up Google My Business
Google My Business is a feature Google added to its search engine in order to generate high-quality traction among targeted users.
Some of the largest businesses in the world are taking advantage of this feature to showcase their shopping hours, address, phone number(s), and other related contact information.
The feature has become a powerful way to remain in touch with the target audience as soon as they start searching.
For those unaware of Google My Business and its implications in a local SEO campaign, it’s time to get started right away.
Comment on well-known photography blogs, groups, and forums
While commenting on popular blogs, groups such as those on FaceBook or forums in your niche may seem like a drawn-out exercise, it’s still an incredibly effective way to drive traffic when you’re starting a photography website.
By that, I do not mean spam comments and replies with your website URL. Become a top fan, write useful comments related to the subject content and finish with, you can read more about it here (leave your site link). Don’t forget to ask them if they find it helpful – this is a genuine way of attracting new readers to your website and to establish good relationships.
By being a useful member of the photography community, others will start to tag you into posts, as you’ll be seen as an expert.
Google Adwords & Facebook Ads
Despite it being a form of paid traffic, Google Adwords & Facebook Ads are super effective at building audiences in quick time. When you create a paid, you’re able to target very specific demographics that are most likely to visit your website.
For example, a wedding photographer could target ads towards users who are between 21-30, who are engaged, live close to your store, are actively searching for wedding items, or reading wedding magazines.
You can start with as little as £1 per click, however, I recommend you use tools such as Ubersuggest, to give you an idea of the Pay Per Click costs for your industry and place your starting spend at that rate.
Start Building Backlinks
Backlinks are one of the ranking factors that the search engines use in order to figure out how high your website should be ranking within the search engines.
Backlinks are considered as the most crucial ranking factor based on what they showcase about your website. Not only do they dictate how many sites are linking back to your website but can imply that your website is a useful resource for the particular keywords that you are looking to rank for.
By checking to see how many authority websites are linking back to your website, Google is much better able to determine where you should be ranking and the overall quality of your website and its content.
There are hundreds of ways to get backlinks when starting a website.
Having good content and approaching other blogs with a simple email which says “Hey, I’ve just written this article about XYZ, and I think your readers may be interested, any chances of including the link in one of your posts?” can be a good start.
This method works best if they already have a link to an article that relates to your topic. If your article is better than the one they already link to they may be willing to change that link to your website instead.
Generally building social media pages and links to your new site should also be a key focus. Not only do they directly send new visitors your way, but they’re also the main indicators search engines like Google use profiles to build ‘brand authority’ which in turn helps to shoot your website up Google rankings.
Finally, I recommend you head to Legiit.com. In the search bar click on users from the dropdown menu and type in FreddyEdmonds – or click here. Edmonds is one of the world’s leading backlink SEO’s has an array of incredible services to get started with. Personally, you can’t go wrong with his Rankzilla PBNs and top-tier guest posts.
I started my first website over 15 years ago, it wasn’t nice and was made on a very old system known as Geocities. But, I loved every minute of running it, and every time a new builder or software came out, I played with it until I learned what it could do.
Then WordPress came along and I was hooked and followed web design as my career path until my photography obsession overtook.
Now, when starting a photography website, WordPress along with a dedicated host is the only direction you should be taking, especially if you are serious about your business and making money.
Thankfully today it’s MUCH easier to get starting a photography website than it was all those years back. You don’t need to know a thing about HTML, PHP, MYSQL, and CSS coding or servers and PHP MyAdmin – thanks to Web Juicee and WordPress you can have your new website live within a few minutes.
