Poland

You must be prepared to watch the European Bisons, the famous symbol of Polish pride, the roe deers, wild boars, polish fox during your Poland wildlife tours.

The borders of Poland map out the outlandishly beautiful spectacles at the heart of Europe. It covers an area of 312,696 square kilometers extending from the celine beaches of the Baltic sea to the astonishing range of Carpathian mountains and It is inhabited by 38 million people of rich history and cultural heritage.

Unlike other nations transformed by the mundane pressure of modernism, Poland preserves its terrestrial identity in its splendid forest hosting a vast kingdom of animals, its snow-capped mountains, a spellbinding bevy of Lakes, beautiful coastal beaches, and stunning dunes.

The Polish people have traditionally been seen as receptive to cultural and artistic trends from all corners of the world. The biodiverse perimeter that Poland is in has continually made it a tourist attraction within and beyond Europe.

On getting to Poland, the adventure had begun before I raised my camera to capture the dramatic moments unfolding before the snowy backdrop. I will try to describe my experience in Poland and give the pros and cons of visiting the dreamland of all wildlife photographers.

Why Visit Poland for wildlife photography

In the beautiful town of Ilawa, which was my first birding tour destination in Poland, the winter launched the reign of fantastic raptors such as; Goshawk, Raven, white-tailed eagle, and rough-legged buzzard.

It was the breeding season for Goshawks, a large winged bird with a white and grey dotted torso and distinctly jaundiced eyes. Photography hides have been strategically plugged into the ground to have their courtship, feeding, and hunting behaviors captured on camera without a call from the shutter sound.

It was necessary to have the hide, where I was nested, at a fair distance from the Goshawks’ nest to avoid attacks for crossing the invisible territorial borders drawn by their scouting and vigilant sights.

On the second day of my trip, I visited Kutno, a town in Central Poland that is about 185 kilometers from Ilawa. It is best to visit in the winter if you’d like to have the pretty white-tailed eagle in your gallery.

Its strong dietary preference for fish makes it descend to the water surface to hunt. The ironic scenery of a bird gliding over a water surface makes it a great moment for the camera to behold.

Izawa, as well as Kutno, host an array of bird species that are globally threatened or delving towards extinction. Wildlife photographers can be reassured of capturing the rare species in the solemnity of their homes in these two Polish towns

Wildlife species to photograph in Poland

Poland is a country in Central Europe. It can be referred to as a global tourism market due to the high yearly turnover number of tourists that visit the country.

Several national parks are alive on Polish soil that can make you a witness to the biodiversity edge that the country has over many others in the continent.

You must be prepared to watch the European Bisons, the famous symbol of Polish pride, the roe deers, wild boars, polish fox during your Poland wildlife tours.

Bird species such as the agile Goshawk, white-tailed eagle, rough-legged buzzard, and the white stork are also present in good numbers.

The white stork in Poland accounts for twenty-five percent of the world’s population of the species and there is a superstition surrounding the bird. It is believed that anyone who sees the white stork is going to have good luck.

The best time of the year to visit Poland

All year-round, Poland is breathtaking under every weather. Its flora and fauna flourish with changing seasons, presenting all shades of beauty in the repository of nature under the watch of enchanting atmospheric conditions.

However, the purpose of the trip to the country is a prime factor in determining the best time of visit. Wildlife photography trips to the florid and diverse bird species in Ilawa and Kutno are best suited for the winter, where many of the birds exhibit interesting and promiscuous behaviors that are peculiar to breeding seasons.

Where to stay in Poland for trips

Warsaw and Krakow

Private hostels can be found in considerable numbers in different cities of Poland.

In major cities, such as Warsaw and Krakow, they’re centrally located and they are functional all year-round, though often with curfews. There is at least one budget hotel in each town, with 120zloty normally enough to get a conducive room, shower, and communal toilets.

Grand Hotel Tiffi

While in Grand Hotel Tiffi, I had a nice time witnessing the bubbly nightlife of Ilawa. There are other affordable hotels with excellent service in Ilawa such as Stary Tartak hotel, Villa Port hotel, Willa Cosmos and Champion hotel among others.

How to get around in Poland

The primary transport link for tourists is by Bus and it is one of the cheapest means of traveling while ensuring at the same time that you don’t miss out on the beautiful natural landscapes in the country.

Most of the Polish intercity buses are comfortable and are large enough to accommodate a good number of passengers if you are traveling in groups.

You can make friends with the driver because they are very good at locating different destinations as though they have Google Earth installed in their heads. You can also be lucky to have a historian in a driver, one with a good grasp of events that have shaped Poland from the past to the present.

Other transport links include the trains, the pospieszny and osbowy which only cost a few zlotys.

Is it safe to travel to Poland?

The Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) ranked Poland as the 24th in the Global peace index. Having survived the belligerent throes of the world wars, Poland has come out to be one of the stable countries with strong international ties.

In general, traveling in Poland is safe. However, one cannot be too careful in keeping one’s belongings from the reach of petty thieves and scammers.

What to pack for a wildlife photography trip to Poland

The list of things to be packed on a wildlife photography trip to Poland may vary depending on the season. However, the place of a good camera on the list is not negotiable, others are accessories . The following are the accessory articles ;

    • A backpack: This is of utmost importance to other accessory items because it helps in holding different items together. It is good to be selective in terms of the type of backpack one chooses for the trip. The handles must not be metallic as this can strain the shoulders and cause pain.
    • Outer Shell Jacket: The weather in Poland is relatively stable and predictable but occasionally there can be shifts to the extremes. Therefore, it is wise to have an outer shell jacket to shield against the cold.
    • Breathable shirts: They are indispensable and should be taken along while packing for the trip.
    • Wilding shoes: This is to ensure we leave light ecological footprints in nature to mitigate the effect of walking through the forest as compared to hiking shoes.
  • Water Bottle

Universal adapter: One can resort to this to recharge your gadgets.

My Suggested Itinerary for a Wildlife Photography Holiday in Sri Lanka

Columbo City

1-2 Days

Sri Lanka is a montage of breathtaking sights and historic places and there’s just so much to take in.

But it’s real beauty can not be seen from the city. Yes, Columbo is beautiful and it’s temples are well worth a visit but more  than a day or two and you’re just wasting value time with nature.

However, you can’t be in Columbo without visiting Viharamahadevi Park (formally Victoria park) and witnessing the Grey-headed flying fox bats which take up residency in the park in their hundreds.

Staying at the XYZ, you can grab a tuk-tuk for a around £1, to the parks entrance. Walk to the furthest point of the park and you’ll soon see these beautiful flying mammals up in the treetops. Dusk is the perfect time.
