Sweden

Wild animals such as deer, moose and lynx stroll around casually in the countryside, and you may be fortunate to come across one or many of them and even take a selfie!.

Certain places in the world offer extra-dose of magic, Sweden effortlessly ranks high on the list of such places. It is a Scandinavian nation known for its team of inland lakes and coastal Islands with vast glaciated mountains and forests. Boasting of its bluefaced archipelagos, to the currant of Northern light, spread artistically across the sky, to the exotic food, fashion, and design, Sweden fits as the ideal location for a special date with nature.

Its incredible taste for details reflects like a sun in the mirror in its architectural wonders, magnetizing restaurants, homes, irresistible textile and furniture. The simplicity of life in Sweden tells of its democracy, one which allows plentiful forms of art and culture trends, both local and foreign, ample air to breathe and thrive.

Sweden’s enviable and rare landscape featuring snow-kissed mountains, beaches, forests, islands, lakes, and coastlines makes it one of the underrated tourist destinations in Europe. There are ways to get back to nature and the unique experience of the wilderness in Sweden suffices for that to a satisfying extent by its riches in wildlife and bird species. It is my pleasure to tell you about my wildlife photography experience on Swedish soil, the pros, and cons of the trip in case you love to visit.

Why visit Sweden for wildlife photography

In the winter, we set out to our first destination in Sweden, Vasterbotten, a region which occupies about one-eight of the total landmass of Sweden. Its landscape features grand mountains, deep forest reserves and mighty rivers.Vasterbotten is known to host a large colony of birds of varying species, so our target was mainly the birds .

After the easy morning walk , we were shown an access route to hotspots , bird hides , feeding trees and stations . One can expect to see owls , the Great grey owl in particular among the spruce, pines ,birch and firs which make up most  forests around here.

Coming across the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), Eurasian Crane (Grus grus),Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)Hooded Crow dsss(Corvus cornix)  was an exposure to new species of birds for me.

Deeper into vasterbotten we proceeded but now with a target bird to see. Vasterbotten is known as a dwelling place to different species of bird that are well represented in numbers and influence. Within its boreal forest the avian kingdom thrives on despite human intrusion of its natural ambience.  It is common place to visit Vasterbotten to capture the life of different birds and wildlife on camera but this phase of our trip was charted for the “old golden male eagle”.

The old male eagle is iconic in this part of Sweden because of the scarcity of its species. It  heads a family of Golden Eagles presently with a wife in Vasterbotten . It has had a long history dating back into the 80s with a female golden eagle that later disappeared at a dire moment in their love affair and this led to its new company founded in a new female. Since then they have been together through breeding seasons and they now have offspring also resident in the forest of vasterbotten.

Vasterbotten, apart from its array of floridly diverse bird species ,accommodates famous wild mammals that are the thrills of the jungle. If you do have an itch that can only be scratched by viewing and capturing birds and animals on camera , you are a trip to vasterbotten far from your craving. There are conducive photography hides and camera traps available to aid your photography so you can dream of taking award-winning shots.

Wildlife species to photograph in Sweden

Sweden is an incredible place for nature enthusiasts and for people with a special inclination to studying the ways of the animals lurking in the wild. Wild animals such as deer, moose and lynx stroll around casually in the countryside, and you may be fortunate to come across one or many of them and even take a selfie!. It is reasonable to anticipate an unforgettable experience of the Swedish wildlife because Sweden is the largest country in European Union but with a low human population density. This creates much space for abundant life forms to have their free reign.

As recorded by the IUCN ( International Union for Conservation of Nature ), Sweden hosts a large population of terrestrial mammals which includes European mole and hedgehog, the mountain hare, the beavers, and the red squirrel. The ungulates are also represented in Sweden wildlife with the significant presence of wild boar , elk , the red deer and roe deer.  Terrestrial carnivores such Eurasian wolves ,brown bears and the secretive red foxes can also be anticipated as one of the highlights of your wildlife photography trip to Sweden.

About 540 species of birds call the wild world of Sweden home. However , less than half of them are migratory birds on their sojourn around the world lodging for the breeding seasons in Sweden before they continue on their intercontinental exodus.

The best time of the year to visit Sweden

In a land as varied as Sweden, the seasons can be very different based on the area you have to visit in your bucket list. So, a foreknowledge of the weather conditions, which may even influence the type of animals or birds you may come across , of your destination is a prime factor in planning your trip.

If your destination is Vasterbotten , you have the Summer season at your disposal for a good time in the wild . You’ll have the opportunity to observe the wilderness within the comfort of a canoe trip which is  suitable for 2 people at a time, in case you are accompanied by your spouse.

Winter and summer both count as the most appropriate time to plan a visit to Sweden! January and February present the beauties of  winter: wolves and aurora in the north, gliding on iced lakes in the south. June to August brings long warm sunny days for visits to the lakes and Islands or scoffing seafood in ravishing coastal villages. October offers the colorful autumn and an enticing thinning of clouds, while December comes with garlands of felicitations.

Accomodation prices vary based on the days of the week. The higher prices span across Sunday to Thursday while the lower prices are charged from Friday to Saturday. However , there are hotels that charge high during the summer peaks regardless of the day. If your destination is Vasterbotten, the list of hotels there includes Lappland hotel, Toppen hotel, Armanas wardshus and more. One can also have a good time in the Ansia campsite in Vasterbotten.

How to get around in Sweden

Sweden has one of the most efficient public transport systems in Europe. The primary transport link is by train travel which is the fastest means to cover a large expanse within the vast Swedish terrain , apart from flight .

The prices for train service are affordable and I can assure you of an excellent one which will offer you a panoramic view of the cities as you travel by. The national train agency is SJ which operates throughout the whole of Sweden. Another train agency is the Inlandsbanan which runs through the North and Central Sweden throughout the Summer.

You can also travel by bus. It is less expensive compared to the train service but it is not as fast and not really appropriate for long journeys. The two prominent bus companies are Swebuss and Netbuss. It is important.

One can also travel via the airplane using the Swedish domestic airline such as SAS. For a country with a lot of lakes and islands ferries and boats are commonplace means of transport.

Is it safe to travel to Sweden

Sweden is safe to visit. It was listed as the 18th out of 163 countries enlisted by the Global Peace index and it also ranks as the 9th in Europe. The people are welcoming, however, it is wise to be vigilant because of the risk of minor crimes and scams in the country.

What to pack for a wildlife photography holiday in Sweden

It is advisable to create a list before one starts packing in preparation for a wildlife photography trip. Unsurprisingly, the camera is the backbone of such a collection. One can refer to other articles of the collection as accessories and they are as follows:

  • A backpack: This is of utmost importance to other accessory items because it helps in holding different items together. It is good to be selective in terms of the type of backpack one chooses for the trip. The handles must not be metallic as this can strain the shoulders and cause pain.

  • Outer Shell Jacket: The weather in Sweden is relatively stable and predictable but occasionally there can be shifts to the extremes. Therefore, it is wise to have an outer shell jacket to shield against the cold.

  • Breathable shirts: They are indispensable and should be taken along while packing for the trip.

  • Wilding shoes: This is to ensure we leave light ecological footprints in nature to mitigate the effect of walking through the forest as compared to hiking shoes.

  • Water Bottle

  • Universal adapter: One can resort to this to recharge your gadgets.

Passport and Visa Information

If you are visiting Sweden as a tourist from a non- European Union country you’ll need a visa. You can check information about the visa to Sweden with the Swedish diplomatic representative in your native country .

For EU nationals, there is no need to get the visa if you are not staying longer than 90 days. But if you are going to stay more than that , a resident permit is required.

When you are travelling as a EU national from one Schengen border- free country by car , you don’t need a passport but for tourists from other non-EU countries you must have a valid passport that has been issued within the last 10 years.

Other places to visit in Sweden

Sweden is graced with wonderful must-see attractions consisting of those that are famously known in the tourism world and those that are in the hidden gem list. There are many touristy areas that are worth a mention but the following are at the top of my list ;

With about 30 national parks, Sweden makes a big conglomerate of national parks as a country. Many of the national parks create opportunities for visitors to experience the magnetic scenery, with well-marked hiking routes.  Good examples of the notable national parks include Abisko national park, which is one of the earliest in Sweden, Tyresta national park at the outskirts of Stockholm, Sarek national park and many other astonishing ones .

The Stockholm archipelago is a beautiful and serene environment characterized by Islands of delight. It is an ideal place to have a date with nature. You can conclude your wildlife photography  trip to Sweden by visiting a place like this.

My Suggested Itinerary for a Wildlife Photography Holiday in Sri Lanka

Columbo City

1-2 Days

Sri Lanka is a montage of breathtaking sights and historic places and there’s just so much to take in.

But it’s real beauty can not be seen from the city. Yes, Columbo is beautiful and it’s temples are well worth a visit but more  than a day or two and you’re just wasting value time with nature.

However, you can’t be in Columbo without visiting Viharamahadevi Park (formally Victoria park) and witnessing the Grey-headed flying fox bats which take up residency in the park in their hundreds.

Staying at the XYZ, you can grab a tuk-tuk for a around £1, to the parks entrance. Walk to the furthest point of the park and you’ll soon see these beautiful flying mammals up in the treetops. Dusk is the perfect time.
